One of the biggest selling points of a rooftop tent is the speed of setup. Unlike a ground tent with poles, pegs, and flysheets, a rooftop tent is permanently ready — you just need to know how to open it. Here's a complete guide to setting up your rooftop tent, from first install to arriving at camp.

Step 1: Mounting Your Rooftop Tent to Your Vehicle

Before your first trip, you'll need to mount the tent to your roof bars or rack. Here's what to do:

  1. Check your roof bar rating. Make sure your crossbars are rated to carry the tent's weight. This should be at least equal to the tent's weight — most Escapade tents weigh between 35kg and 65kg depending on the model.
  2. Position the tent. With help (rooftop tents are heavy), lift the tent onto the bars. Centre it for even weight distribution, or position it according to your preference.
  3. Attach the mounting brackets. All Escapade tents come with adjustable mounting brackets that clamp to standard 50mm crossbars. Tighten them firmly but don't overtorque.
  4. Check clearances. Make sure the tent doesn't foul any antennas, sunroof, or accessories. Check that it opens fully without obstruction.
  5. Do a test drive. Before your first camping trip, drive locally to check for any movement or noise. Re-tighten if needed after the first 50–100km.

Step 2: Arriving at Camp — Setting Up Your Rooftop Tent

Softshell Tents (Summit and THRE360)

  1. Unzip and remove the rain cover (store it in the bag provided).
  2. Unfold the tent upward — it will spring open as the hinges release.
  3. Extend the ladder and position it at a comfortable angle against the vehicle.
  4. Open any windows or vents as needed for ventilation.
  5. Climb up and you're ready.

Hardshell Tents (Horizon and Discovery)

  1. Release the front and rear latches on the shell.
  2. Push the lid up — gas struts hold it open automatically.
  3. Extend the ladder and position it against the vehicle.
  4. The mattress is already inside and ready — no unpacking required.

Tips for a Better Setup

  • Park on level ground where possible. It makes sleeping more comfortable and reduces strain on the tent hinges.
  • Use the ladder stabiliser feet. On soft ground, the ladder can sink. A small square of wood or a dedicated stabiliser pad under each foot helps.
  • Close all vents before driving. Leaving a vent open on the motorway creates noise and can damage the zip.
  • Pack away dry. If you pack a softshell tent while the canvas is wet, air it out as soon as you get home to prevent mould.

How Long Does Setup Really Take?

With the Horizon hardshell: around 60 seconds. With the Discovery hardshell, Summit, or THRE360: around 2 minutes. Either way, you'll be in your sleeping bag faster than it takes to put up a traditional tent — and far more comfortably.
